Envy: How Jealousy is a Disease

Envy grows like a tree. First, the roots take hold, and once they become reinforced, they start to break through the surface.

A little envy can be helpful. It can make you competitive and want to grow, become better. However, jealousy is a disease when it breaks through your surface and becomes overwhelming or contorted to a fear of missing out. In this blog, I want to share how excessive envy and the fear of missing out can harm you personally and financially.

Sabotages Dreams

Envy can sabotage your dreams. Your dreams should be yours. Not what society says they should be or what an influencer convinces you is a perfect lifestyle. If you are constantly chasing the life someone else lives, are you living YOUR life, creating your path? The answer is no!

When you see what seems like a perfect life on social media or friends doing extraordinary and adventures the fear of missing out can present itself. But remember, social media does not always give a clear picture or tell the whole story. For example, that influencer may be financially unstable and pretend they are happy.

If you are trying to follow in someone else’s footsteps, you may be following a rabbit hole that ultimately brings you lower than you are now financially and/or emotionally. Live your life, follow your dreams, not the dreams of your peers.

Drains Your Wallet

Now, this may be obvious, but your wallet WILL suffer when you live with a fear of missing out. If you see a friend purchase an iPhone 13, you feel the need to get an iPhone 13 (they are $1,000+). You notice an influencer go to Hawaii; you need to travel to Hawaii (average trip is $2,000+). We could give you endless examples. All of these purchases, big or small, do add up.

Remember, you should be living YOUR life, not that of a peer. So when you start feeling like you are missing out, take a second to reflect and ask yourself, “would this purchase or action truly benefit me? Or am I just playing “follow the leader.”

How can I help you live your desired lifestyle?

I’m offering you a complimentary one-on-one session where we discuss your goals and dreams. Let’s chat, I’d love to listen and understand your unique situation.
